My research asks when racial and ethnic identities bring groups together politically and when they pull them apart, a central question for understanding polarization in an increasingly diverse nation. One line of work studies "people of color" identity: whether a shared pan-racial identity produces political solidarity across racial groups. A related project traces how status concerns and group solidarity pull some nonwhite voters toward the Republican Party, part of the broader partisan realignment reshaping American polarization. A second line of work examines descriptive representation. It asks whether people of color feel represented by officials of other raial minority groups, and how group consciousness shapes whether people act politically on their identities. Across these projects I combine survey and behavioral experiments with observational data to study how minority voters make their political homes. I would welcome collaborators in C-SPAM.
